Beach Walk 250 - Witch's Brew
The witches were out on the water reminding me to cackle away my worries about the shadow side of life.
Beach Walk 249 - Happy Birthday to Lexi!
Mahalo nui loa to all of you who sent her greetings and pictures and sand dollars. We love you! (And I’m just a little sad I didn’t give more advance notice…)* Dorothy Y.* Peter & Miguel* Dan B.* Barbara B.* Grandmother Blanche
Beach Walk 248 - Give without Guilt
I was listening to the Gilmore Gang podcast yesterday, as Jason Calacanis talked about a new video podcast he is starting with Podtech. He has negotiated with his sponsors (and plans to do the same with his guests) to donate money from every episode to a private school in NY, to pay the way for foster kids in Brooklyn to attend.
Beach Walk 247 - Zero to Tahiti
Kris is a great example of someone over 40 discovering something new she loves and pouring herself into it wholeheartedly and wholebodily. I can’t begin to tell you the many hurdles a new paddler faces — physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual challenges. Being able to tap into your love of the activity to get through all of these is clearly one of Kris’s secrets.
Beach Walk 246 - Passionate and not Invested
Being passionate about something yet detached from the results is a real “zen” thing to accomplish, yet I tackle these sorts of goals every day! I try to see how much I can tap into my true preferences, and then, “drop it” and let the universe take over for me. After all, there’s much more going on than I can see from behind my own eyes.
Beach Walk 245 - Islands of Space and Time
Islands are wonderful metaphors. The weather is almost always different on the other side, and it reminds me I too can go somewhere else.
Beach Walk 244 - Surf's Up!
My friend Lana called on her way home from work who said her boyfriend Chris had heard from the guys who cut their grass (and a lot of beach front homes too) that big waves were in town. I just love that word-of-mouth! So we all headed over to Kailua Beach with the boogie board and caught some great rides.
Beach Walk 243 - Painters' Perspectives
Mark Brown and Spencer Chang were doing plein air painting on the beach today. Spencer is the student, Marc is the instructor. Marc is very happy to be making a living at painting, and he shares his tips with us on how he made the transition to doing what he loves.
Beach Walk 242 - Debunking Double Standards
One of the discussion lists I read was talking about how the Cardinal of Boston has started a blog that does not accept comments. The discussion quickly veered off of the structure, “comments yes or no” and into the abuse issues of the Boston diocese. It’s a classic case of double standard – where by the content of the situation (who the blogger is) over-rode the structure (what are the basic blogger bill of rights?)
Beach Walk 241 - A hui hou, Evelyn
Evelyn DeWitt never lived in Hawaii, but she visited here many times and has family members who live here. One of her wishes was to have her ashes scattered at sea here in the islands. Today we join the family in saying goodbye to her, in that special, aloha style way.
Beach Walk 240 - False Advertising!
I saw a picture in a magazine promoting a hotel group, using our local beach as the setting. One problem: there are NO hotels in our community. Join me as I talk about false advertising and the apparent greed of some property developers. (Caveat: I find this sort of greed very unattractive.)
Beach Walk 239 - Home Is Where The Heat Is
I’ve realized thus for some time: certain climates are much more physiologically stressful to me than others. Being a largely Vata body type, dryness and cold are hard for me, whereas warm, humid environments are very soothing. Although I love the beauty and my long time friends in New Mexico, I find the climate creates a constant hum of stress on me, especially spring and fall when the juniper and chamisa allergies are rampant!
